Continuing Education will be hosting two new programs dedicated to teaching students to paint or draw.
Carolyn Gains, Community Education coordinator, expects many people from around the community to participate in the art programs.
“So far, we have high school students, retired people and SHSU students enrolled in these programs,” Gains said. “All the community can come out to have a chance to interact with each other.”
Beginning drawing will introduce students the basic techniques in free hand drawing. Students have the opportunity to create several drawings during the course of the class. At the end of the course, the students and the instructor will meet for a final “critique” of the completed work. Beginning drawing will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. through 8:30 p.m.
Beginning painting will introduce students to the style and techniques of painting. Students will focus on still life, the human figure and landscapes. They will also create a variety of small-scale paintings, and at the end of the course, the instructor will meet for a final critique of their work.
Beginning painting will be held every Wednesday and Saturday. On Wednesday, the class will be held 6:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, the class will be held 1 a.m. through 12:00 p.m.
Each class will last five weeks and will require a $59.00 fee. The fee will not cover supplies, and each student will have to purchase them through their own funds.
With the cooperation of the Art department, two graduating art students from Sam will teach beginning drawing and beginning painting. Sara Dimitt will be teaching beginning drawing and Kent Byers will be teaching beginning painting. Gains wanted to provide students with an opportunity to teach the art classes so they will be able to have experience.
“These students will be able to have teaching experiences for their resume,” Gains said. “Both these students will be able to hone their craft as well as get paid.”
Gains hopes that with the start of this type of program, other departments will be interested in helping their students get teaching experience through Continuing Education programs.
“We hope that other departments will considered working with us to help their students get some teaching experience,” Gains said.
There are still openings for these classes and students can still register. For more information contact Carolyn Gains of Continuing Education at 294-3701 or visit the website at http://www.shsu.edu/~exl_www/index.html
