Dance Department holds 5th annual concert for Alumni

On Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. SHSU’s dance department will hold their fifth annual alumni concerts. The concerts are part of a four day alumni reunion that will consist of classes, lectures and social events by and for SHSU dance alumni. This weekend’s concerts will feature mostly modern dance. Golden Wright, a SHSU graduate student in the dance department, is producing the concerts this weekend. He said that, “many of the pieces have a pedestrian feel.” This means that they use movements that you would see people do in their everyday life. Therefore, “you don’t have to be a dancer to appreciate the piece,” said Wright. The alumni concerts will be full of pieces choreographed and performed by alumni, faculty or students. It allows the dance department to bring back alumni to see what they have done since they left and show the alumni what the dance department is doing today. One alum is bringing a group of kids that she teaches to perform her piece. Others will use SHSU dance students in their pieces. Dana Nicolay, a professor of dance at SHSU, will be bringing a piece to the concert as well. The concerts are also a way to show the alumni the talents of some of the alumni scholarship recipients. The concerts are not just for dance students and alumni to enjoy. Students and residence of Huntsville are welcome as well. The concert is a great way to get a dose of culture in a small town. “People don’t know what they are missing till they come. If they came, they would be surprised to see they would look forward to it next year,” said Wright. Tickets are just $5 for students and $8 for general tickets. The concerts will be in the Dance Theater in AB III. For more information call 294-3988 or 294-1875.
