Delta Sigma Theta to ‘broadcast’ sorority for Delta Week 2003

Once again it’s on! Delta Week 2003 will be held April 21-27. The Kappa Mu chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will host a week of events for the entire campus. With the theme of “WDST: Broadcasting Since 1973” the sorority will be “broadcasting” from different parts of the world every day.

On Monday, the sorority will broadcast from the West Coast. They are asking the entire campus participate by “representin’ your set” by wearing their organization’s shirts. During the day they will also host a mini-step/strut show in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area from noon to 2 p.m.

Later that night, the organization will host its annual “Mr. 10 Scholarship Pageant” in the LSC Ballroom at 7:13 p.m. Tickets can be purchased from any contestant or member of the sorority for $3 presale. Tickets may also be purchased at the door for a price of $3 with a canned good or $5 without.

Tuesday boasts another thrilling and fun-filled day of events. The organization will be broadcasting “Down in tha Dirty” – from the Dirty South.

A healthy scavenger hunt entitled “The Hunt for the Red Elephant” will kick-off the day’s events. The first 25 people to sign up will be allowed to participate in the event and the winner will receive free admission into the remainder of the Delta Week events. Sign-ups will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the LSC Mall Area and the hunt will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Succeeding the day event, there will be a freestyle contest co-sponsored by the men of the Talented Tenth. Any person may enter the contest for a fee of $10. It will be held in the LSC Theatre at 7:13 p.m. The cost of the show will be $1 with a canned good or article of clothing or $2 without. Contact Chastity Caesar at 936-294-0066 for more information.

“Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo” is the theme for Wednesday. The East Coast is the next place the organization will be broadcasting. In honor of New York, the founding location for break dancing, there will be a break dance battle held in the LSC Mall Area from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At a seminar that night – “All about the Benjamins” – will be giving away free money and will also have a speaker who will inform students how to pay off their student loans. The seminar will begin promptly at 7:13 p.m.

On Thursday, the Deltas will travel internationally to broadcast from the Caribbeans. They will be host Reggae Sunsplash from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gazebo.

They will have music, free food and drinks. There will also be a water fight so be sure to bring your water gun and balloons. Also, for the people who just want to relax and play games, there will also be a “dry zone,” so there is no excuse not to come out and enjoy the Caribbean-themed event. The after party for Reggae Sunsplash will be held at the Walker County Fairgrounds beginning at 10:13 p.m.

The Deltas will travel back to the great city of Huntsville on Friday to broadcast the news from all over the world. Throughout the day, the “DNN: Delta News Network” will hand out fact sheets about events that have transpired throughout the week as well as political events and facts from around the world.

That night, the sorority will host its 4th Annual Mother/Daughter Weekend Conference. All women are invited to attend. The deadline to sign up for the event was April 10, however interested women may still participate by paying a late fee of $35. To publicize their week, the members will be giving away free Delta Week CDs at the Sigma Gamma Rho yard show on Wednesday.
