El Paso County Democratic Party to stage protest against the El Paso Times Editorial Board
The El Paso County Democratic Party will stage a 12-hour public protest against the El Paso Times Editorial Board on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The protest has been organized by El Paso County Democratic Party Chairman Rick Melendrez, Party Secretary Bobbie Telles, Democratic Party Precinct Chairs and other members of the Democratic Party.
“The El Paso Times Editorial board has done it again. This time it has endorsed Republican candidates for governor and senator over Democratic candidates TONY SANCHEZ for governor and RON KIRK for senator,” Melendrez said. “Under George W. Bush, Rick Perry, John Cornyn and the Republican Party, El Paso has regressed and border conditions have worsened as exemplified in the way that through Cornyn, El Paso was robbed of more than 800 solid paying jobs with the closing of the successful gaming operations at the Tigua Indian Nation’s Speaking Rock Casino.”
“Then sadly,” Melendrez added, “El Paso Times Executive Editor Don Flores is beholden to the Republican Party as a Bush appointee to the Texas State College Board of Regents, which he now chairs. Together with the Times’ parent company of Gannett, the morning newspaper repeatedly has shown that it doesn’t reflectthe views of the majority of El Pasoans. Mr. Flores has crossed the line in his career as a journalist.” Melendrez said.
Melendrez stressed that the protest was specifically against the Times’ Editorial Board and not against the reporters and staff who call El Paso their home. “We are inviting El Pasoans to join with us in solidarity. Deliver your newspapers back to the steps of the El Paso Times as a symbol and let’s show The El Paso Times Editorial Board our support for Tony Sanchez and Ron Kirk,” Melendrez said.
