The SHSU department of health and kinesiology and the American Heart Association are sponsoring “Hoops for Heart”, a series of three-on-three basketball tournaments on Feb. 21-22.
“Our tournament is designed to collect money that can be submitted to the A.H.A. for research and tools for cardiologists,” said Dr. Robert Case, a professor in the department of health and kinesiology.
Case said the deadline for entry is Feb. 18 at 5 p.m. He said the tournament will begin on Feb. 21, and the tournaments will last 20 minutes each. The men will play half of their tournament, or 10 minutes, and the women will play half of theirs on this day.
He said on Feb. 22, the women will play the other half of their tournament during the halftime segment of the women’s basketball game against SFA, which begins at 4 p.m.
The men will play the other half of their tournament during the men’s basketball game, which begins that evening at 7 p.m.
Case said there will be a silent auction at the men’s game starting at 3:30 p.m., and the winner will be announced during the game that evening. He said there will also be an auction during halftime for a color television set with a DVD player and VCR included, valued at $1,000.
“A television worth $1,000 is obviously going to be large, so we will deliver it to the home of the highest bidder, just like Mattress Mack would,” Case said.
“Financial gifts to the AHA and items that can be auctioned off during the SFA-SHSU basketball games at Johnson Coliseum on Feb. 22 will be appreciated,” Case said. “Any such gifts can be tax deductions, and we will provide appropriate cards for that purpose.
