Lacrosse team looking for more players

Believe it or not, Bearkats, but Sam Houston has a lacrosse team. Most students don’t know it’s a club sport and has been for quite some time. Several students have recently taken interest in the sport to test their competitive nature and push their boundaries to the limits. The Indians of North America invented lacrosse as a source of settling disputes when random violence was considered “not enough.”Lacrosse, in modern day, is still a physical sport, but gives respect to the health of the athletes involved by requiring pads and equipment to be worn during games and enforcement of several rules designed to keep players safe. Lacrosse also takes these physical traits and combines them with the fast-paced mental aspect of the game. With these physical essentials, lacrosse simultaneously combines qualities from many of the better-known sports. Lacrosse is hard to explain because it is played like soccer and hockey mixed, but also has some basketball and football elements combined with it. Words cannot describe the feeling of being in a game. This semester is the off-season; however, the Bearkat lacrosse team knows how to stay busy. Scrimmage games against several surrounding colleges and club teams are regularly scheduled and practices are held twice a week. The team is also gearing up for the 22nd Annual Texas A&M Fall Lacrosse Classic on Nov. 2 and 3, which will bring almost every team across Texas together for a weekend full of action. Any Bearkats interested in cheering on their school at the tournament would be warmly welcomed for their support.Lacrosse is known as a mostly northern sport, but the sport is gaining more participants as the years go by. The lacrosse team has roughly 25 people and is always looking for new members. No experience or equipment is required and those looking to try out can attend weekly practices on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. on intramural field one, across from the HKC. You can also visit the team’s Web site at http://www.shsulax.com for additional information. If you are looking for something new and competitive, lacrosse is the sport for you. Lacrosse offers strong competition and friendships that can last a lifetime.Go ahead, Bearkats; get involved and test yourself!
