The SHSU Student Health Center is administrating flu vaccinations Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at no charge. The center will administer the vaccination until the supplies are exhausted, said Keith Lott ,SHSU Health Center director.”It was an administrative decision to order an additional 100 vaccinations,” said Lott. The health center started administrating the vaccination on Oct. 23 at 8 a.m. By 1 p.m., the health center had only 70 left.”It is on a first come first serve basis,” said Lott. No appointment is necessary. The immunity of the vaccination will go into effect 10-14 days after the shot is administered, said Lott. The shot will last for the duration of the flu season. “We recommend that everyone receive a shot at least once a year,” said Lott. The flu season typically last from the beginning of fall until the beginning of spring, said Lott.According to the National Flu Surveillance Network, there are six trends to help warn an area of the flu during the flu season: no activity, first case, watch, alert, warning and epidemic. The trend for Texas is typically as follows: for the month of October- no activity, November- watch and alert, December- alert, January- warning, February- epidemic and March warning and alert, according to the NFSN.Receiving the vaccination would benefit a student in many ways, said Lott. The only side effect will be a sore arm. “If a student did not have insurance, it would be costly to get this vaccination on their own,” said Lott. “This vaccination will protect students from getting the flu. “Anyone who has ever had the flu knows that it can destroy a schedule. They will miss class, extra-curricular activities and work. It can put them in a real bind and we would like to help the students out.”” I got my flu shot because I did not want to be sick,” said junior economics major Erika Veasley. “It is also more economical to get it at school because it is free.”For additional information, students can contact the Student Health Center at 294-1805.
