NPHC holds Greek week events Sept. 16-19

The National Pan-Hellenic Council of Sam Houston State University is holding Operation Greek Week 2K3 Sept. 15-19 hosting tons of events for the SHSU student body.Cerone Lacey, member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. said, “People should come to our events to get to know the Greeks and to bridge the gap between Greek and non-greek.”On Monday, the Greeks held “The Greek Sweet Tooth” in the mall area they passed out cookies and candy to anyone who was looking to satisfy their sweet tooth. Greek Assembly was held last night in the LSC Ballroom for those students interested in learning about the six Greek organizations that are held on campus.According to Jennifer Roberts, advisor of NPHC, those students that are interested in joining one of the six Greek organizations on campus, they must attend Greek Assembly. Those who attended learned about each of the Greek organizations in more detail and were informed about the hazing act.Today, the Greeks will be doing community service at the Good Shepherd Mission from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., and the community service is open to anyone who would like to participate.”Only For The Grown and Sexy” is a social event that will be held tonight in the LSC Ballroom from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m with food and drinks. The Greeks ask that everyone wear black and or white in respect for NPHC’s national colors.Bethany Duncan, president of NPHC and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Inc, said that tonight’s event is after 5 but there is no need for prom dresses. “This event is very casual, slacks and a little black dress are perfect to wear. Come jazzy but not too jazzy,” Duncan said.On Wednesday, “Black Reading is Fundamental” will take place in the LSC mall area. The Greeks will be raffling off 10 to 15 books to encourage the importance of the more a person knows the more a person grows.”Who Got Game” will also be held on Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Kat Klub, those students that attend must bring their student ID for entry. This is a free event for the students to be able to play pool or any of the other games that are in the Kat Klub.”Smoker’s Rush” is on Thursday, and according to Duncan, it is the biggest event the NPHC puts on every year. The members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. will be entertaining the crowd through stepping and music. The Unified Greek Council along with the ladies of Krimson Kourt, Inc. will also be performing.”Coming to Smoker’s Rush, people can expect to have a lot of fun, see a lot of entertainment and tradition through stepping ,and how it has changed over time,” Duncan said. Tickets for Smoker’s Rush are available for $8 pre-sale at any of this week’s events. Those that are unable to purchase a ticket will have to pay $12 at the door which covers your fee for the step show and the party.
