ROTC aims to impress during recruiting week

Driver back down.A conversation like that one might be heard during the heat of combat inside the M1-A1 Abrams, the U.S. Armys main battle tank, which will be displayed today on the Sam Houston State campus.Members of the Texas National Guard will be providing information and answering questions while showing off their hardware in a recruitment effort from about 7:30 a.m.3 p.m. The 60-ton tank, which has the firepower of a 120mm cannon and three machine guns, will be parked between the Smith-Hutson business building and Frels Hall. Dont worry Bearkats; a constant presence of ROTC cadets will be on guard in the mall area during the display, according to Maj. Andre Dean.The M1-A1 is part of an U.S. Army recruiting week at SHSU. Besides the National Guard, recruiters from the active Army, Army Reserves and ROTC will be on hand. The heavy hardware continues on Wednesday when an UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter will land in Bowers Stadium and be displayed from 1-4 p.m. On Thursday two Hum-vees will roll up and be displayed in the mall area.Events will conclude on Friday when SHSUs ROTC unit embarks on a 26.2-mile road march to Madisonville.
