The men’s and women’s cross country team are ready to take on the Southland Conference. The Southland Conference Championship race is scheduled for Nov. 4 at the Northwestern State University Golf Course in Natchitoches, La.University of Texas – Arlington women are the defending SLC champions while Stephen F. Austin holds the championship title in the men’s division. In last year’s competition, SHSU women placed ninth and the men brought home fourth. This year, Greg Hinze, SHSU cross-country head coach said the men’s team is ready for a win.”The men are going to make a serious run at the title and frankly, I’ll be very disappointed if we lose,” Hinze said. “SFA has a good team; they’re the defending champions and we’re going to have to run to win. We can’t just show up and think they’re going to hand it to us.”Hinze said there would be tough competition between SFA and SHSU, and the results will probably be close.”The only thing I know for sure is that it’s going to be close, which ever way it goes,” he said. “Either we’re going to win by a few or they are. Neither one of us is going to blow away the other.”The women have nursed injuries lately, but the competition field is wide-open, unlike the men, Hinze said. “Team-wise, we will definitely finish better than we were last year,” he said. “We’re nursing so many injuries I ought to start bringing my daughter’s bottles to practice, so how well we run is anyone’s guess.”Hinze said he was pleased with how freshman Gaby Mendoza developed physically in such a short time and she could be in the top five at the conference.”I hate putting expectations and pressure on a freshman because you don’t ever know how they’re going to react to this type of situation without going through it, but Gaby Mendoza might win the thing,” he said. The race schedule begins at 9:30 a.m. for the women’s 5,000m and 10:30 a.m. for the men’s 8,000m.
