Soul Lifters Gospel Choir will showcase 14 of Sam Houston’s most eligible Christian bachelors on Wednesday, Nov. 15 in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom at 7 p.m.The event, “God’s Creation-Man 2000,” will give SHSU females the chance to place donations for a date with one of these men.The event is a first annual fund-raiser in conjunction with the United Way and is being hosted by Shelly Wade, anchor from Houston’s 97.9 “The Box” radio station, said committee officials. Sandy Johnson, event chairperson, was responsible for running with the idea and gathering the majority of the contestants, said Kevin Ray, event committee member and contestant.The show will begin with the men’s biographies being read. They then will state what scripture they live by and why, Ray said.The highlight of the event will be the ladies’ opportunity to donate money for a date with the men. Donations start at $5.”This event is way to introduce the saved men to the saved women on campus and to let women realize that not all men are dogs,” said Charles Mitchell, event committee member.”We want to let women know that you do not have to sell yourself short or settle for just anything,” Ray said. “We are not all rapists, tramps or con-artists.”Women who donate the most for each man will win a dinner with their date at The Junction Restaurant.”I want to show the women of Sam Houston that there are some Godly men on campus who will treat them right and not disrespect them,” said contestant Jeff Gaspard.There were certain qualifications that the men met before participating in the program. “They must have been saved according to Romans 10:9,” Ray said.This scripture reads: “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved,” according to the New Testament of the Holy Bible.In addition, Gaspard said all men went through an etiquette class taught by Dr. Thelma J. Douglass, vice president of Student Services, and were watched on campus to assure they were living in a Godly manner.”Come out to see young men who are not ashamed to say that they are saved,” said Nadia Harrision, event committee member.The men are: Jesse Perry, Carlos Brooks, Jeff Gaspard, Jon Workman, Brandon Cooper, Greg Smith, Chris Foster, Juaquinn Shaw, Corey Davis, Lawrence Taylor, Andrew Etuk, Lee Washington, Johnathan Murray and Kevin Ray. A surprise guest will also be up for donations.”Please come dressed in business attire,” said Tamesha Kennerson, Soul Lifters vice president. “We have to remember that this is still a Christian function,” she said.Tickets are $2 in advance and $3 at the door. “Please come out and support us and the other organizations that these men represent,” Mitchell said. “And glorify the Lord in the process.”
