Over 800 prospective students will have the opportunity to see what SHSU has to offer when the Office of Undergraduate Admissions hosts its bi-annual ‘Saturdays at Sam’ this Saturday.”This is basically a campus preview for those interested in attending the university,” said Jennifer Pereira, admissions counselor and co-coordinator of the event. “They’ll visit with professors in their area of interest and tour the university.”Pereira said about 120 current students from different campus organizations and majors will be on-hand to assist visitors and show the prospective students around campus. In addition to campus tours, visitors will be able to go inside some dorm rooms. “Some students have agreed to showcase their rooms to show what they’re like when furnished,” Pereira said.Recruiting for the event began in September when posters and pamphlets were sent to high schools and junior colleges. Pereira and other recruiters from the Admissions Council have also been visiting schools and distributing information. There is no fee for participation in the event; however, reservations are required. The next opportunity prospective students will have will be on March 29, 2003.”We need people to sign up ahead of time so that we know how many people will be here, how many we need to plan for,” Pereira said.Pereira said that although exact numbers are not available, she thinks that the majority of people attending Saturdays at Sam return as students.Saturdays at Sam has proven to be a successful tool for recruiting students since it began in 1987. The event is held once each fall and spring semester. In addition to campus tours, visitors will be able to speak with financial aid counselors, and residence life representatives. Student Activities will also be present to give insight into some of the fun things SHSU has to offer. An Organizations Fair will be held at noon, allowing students to showcase their organizations and invite visitors to attend SHSU.Each visitor will be given a ticket at check in, which they use to win door prizes throughout the day. Most of the door prizes have been donated by various bookstores.”They’ll be able to check their application status, but they can’t register until orientation,” Pereira said. “They will also be able to put deposits down on campus housing.”SHSU Cheerleaders and the Orange Pride Dance Team will provide entertainment about11:30 a.m.Although the organizations fair is usually fairly full, Pereira said student organizations might still be able to sign up for a table. Those interested should contact Student Activities at 294-3861.
