After taking a week off, the Sam Houston State volleyball team is ready to start Southland Conference play. Coach Brenda Gray really welcomed the week off because of injuries. Jessica Dominquez, a six-foot freshman and Jennifer Henrichsen, a five foot ten inch sophomore both have casts on their feet do to heel injuries. The casts will remain on for two weeks and the girls will travel this week to the games. Senior Carrie Sartain is still having problems with her back that she injured in the off-season. Sartain will be in and out of practice due to her back, but she will be ready for the games. Coach Gray would like to have all her girls’ healthy going into Southland Conference play. But she is still very excited about the start of conference play. The Bearkats will play three games in four days. Their first Southland Conference opponent will be Louisiana-Monroe (3-7), on Friday, Sept. 19 at Monroe, LA at 7 p.m. Their second Southland Conference opponent will be Northwestern State (5-6), on Saturday Sept. 20 at Natchitoches, LA at 2 p.m. The two teams have a lot of the same girls back and all of their coaches have returned. “Northwestern State is the better team out of the two,” said Coach Gray. Northwestern State and Louisiana-Monroe will play each today to start Southland Conference play. Coach Gray said that it would be great to start conference play with two victories. “But we need to be ready for this week and take care of one game at a time,” said Coach Gray. The third opponent is from the Big 12, Baylor (6-5), will be the Bearkats home opener on Monday Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The Bearkats played Wyoming and lost but the Bears played them twice and lost both of their meetings. Before the Baylor game be on Monday be on the look out for the Bearkat volleyball team handing out flyers and at the game there will be giveaways happening all throughout the game. The volleyball team hopes everyone will come out to see the home opener.
