Volleyball netters drop two more SLC games

The Sam Houston State volleyball team dropped two games this weekend against rivalry Texas State-San Marcos (SWT) and Texas-San Antonio.

The Bobcats defeated the Bearkats 32-30, 20-30, 30-15 and 30-13.

“Friday they fought like they wanted to win,” said Assistant coach Tracie Bendele. The Bearkats fought hard in the first two games, winning the second, but Southland Conference leader Texas State took over in the third and fourth games to take its ninth SLC victory Friday night at Johnson Coliseum. “We had more mistakes than the Bobcats,” said Bendele.

Sophomore Alisha Fowler led the Bearkats with 14 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Chrissy Engle added 12 kills while freshman Rhae Walderman lead the Bearkats with 18 digs.

Lizzle Nowke led Texas State with 16 kills and three blocks.

UTSA defeated Sam Houston State 31-29, 28-30, 19-30, 30-13, 15-7. “Saturday the fight was not there like on Friday. They looked like they had no drive,” said Bendele. The Bearkats had four players score in double figure kills with Fowler collecting 15, Walderman and Senior Summer Neiman both getting 12 kills and Engle added 11 kills.

Junior Karlee Butler had a total of 83 assists in both matches this weekend.

The Bearkats drop to 6-12 for the season and 3-7 in SLC action. “Who ever is fired up will win in the SCL on any given night,” said Bendele.

“The Johnson Coliseum did a great job with the Hawaiian theme, on Friday night, the fans were excited and did their part,” said Bendele.
