First off, I would like to say that I sympathize with Daphne Bottos and the busy life she leads. I know I have a lot ahead of me with just one major, and I can only imagine what two must be like.
Be that as it may, you could still make time to watch some of the news even if you don’t think you have any. With the blitz of information the media throws at each and every one of us every day, it surely can’t take more than a few minutes to catch up on the war. I have become fed up with much of the coverage of the war as well.
However, I still feel it is my patriotic duty to pay attention to what’s going on in the world. Far too many Americans didn’t care about the outside world before Sept. 11, and you see what that brought us.
Now on to a related topic. The war in Iraq is the most just and righteous war our nation has fought since World War II. I don’t see how anyone can be opposed to it after what the tyrant in Baghdad has done to his own people, as well as his neighbors, during his 30-year reign of terror.
Something like 400,000 Iranians killed in Iraq’s eight year war with Iran. In addition, hundreds of thousands of Kurds, and who knows how many everyday Iraqis have died at the whim of Saddam and his sons.
This war is not about oil, it’s about freeing people from oppression and insuring that Saddam doesn’t threaten his neighbors or us in the future. To be honest, I’m not so sure Saddam has any major ties to Al Qaeda. But left to develop his weapons of mass destruction it would only be a matter of time before he and Osama realized that they had a common foe. The world tried to appease Hitler in the years leading up to the Second World War, and all it got us was worthless promises and 75 million dead.
We dare not let such a thing happen again. The majority of the Iraqi people that have been liberated so far have greeted our troops with open arms. Eight thousand Iraqi troops surrendered without a fight. They recognize the truth of the situation. That this war is not about oil and it’s not a war against them. It is a war to remove one of history’s great mass murderers and despots, and insure that he never harms another innocent life. I support our troops and the righteous cause which they are fighting for. I fail to see how any American could feel any differently.
