Wiley to speak at journalism banquet

Tony Wiley, vice president and director of Communications for the Houston Texans, will be the guest speaker Thursday night at the annual Journalism Awards Banquet.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the program at the Sam Houston Memorial Museum Walker Education Center.

“Putting on the Glitz” is the theme for the banquet that will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Tickets are $6 for journalism students and $10 for non-majors and are available in the Dan Rather Communications Building office.

Every spring students get the opportunity to be rewarded for their work. While the dinner is open for anyone to attend, the scholarships and prizes awarded are for journalism students.

Cash prizes and certificates will be given to students involved in the journalism, public relations, photography and advertising programs.

Presentations of scholarships and awards of excellence will be given to seniors noted for their grade point average and involvement in outside activities.

A panel of journalism professors will serve as judges for the competition.

Christy Cook, chairperson for the banquet said the event gives journalism students and department supporters a chance to reconnect and celebrate.

“It is a great chance for all the journalism students to get together and really get involved and excited about the journalism department and their future careers,” Cook said.

While the banquet is a time to celebrate, it is also a chance to recognize the accomplishments of students.

Cakes Unlimited of Huntsville will provide an Italian dinner for the evening.
