Womens track team fourth, men ninth at Aggie meet

Several top individual finishes boosted the womens track and field team to a fourth place finish out of 17 teams this past weekend at the College Station Relays at Texas A&M University.The mens team finished ninth out of 13 teams, with several individuals and relay teams recording top finishes. Texas A&M won both the mens and womens titles.Precious Madison won the long jump for the women with her leap of 19 feet, 11 inches. Second place finishers were Holly Pitzenberger in the 5,000m run with a time of 18 minutes, 26.18 seconds and Carol Dyer in the 400m hurdles with 1:00.03.Carol got second but she ran really well, coach Greg Hinze said. I think shes going to run really fast before the year is over.Hinze said although Madison won the event, she is capable of jumping farther, as she proved with her indoor season jump of 20-2.5.There were a lot of good people (in the long jump), but the conditions werent conducive to good performances. Shes capable of jumping farther, he said.Tony Vining was second for the mens team in the 3,000m steeplechase with 9:53.15 while Courtney Boston finished third in the 100m with 10.73. Both the 4×400 and 4×100 mens relay teams were fourth with times of 3:16.82 and 41.73. Runners for the mile relay were Chris Stewart, Adrian Ray, Brandon Bowling and Brad Buegeler. Stewart and Ray teamed up with Shane Christian and Chris Foster to make up the 4×100 team.The womens 4×400 relay team earned third place points for the Bearkats with 3:56.48. Members of that relay were Dyer, Kelli Alexander, Susie Jones and Rotasha Allison.Triple jumper Roderick Allen placed fourth with his jump of 47-9.75. Sharonda Haynes threw 45-6.5 to earn third place honors in the womens shot put. Sharonda Haynes had a good mark in the shot, Hinze said. The Bearkats opened the outdoor season by hosting the Meredith York Relays at Bowers Stadium on March 9, where several athletes finished in the top three places.Terry Coleman won the discuss throw with a heave of 154-5 and T.J. Creters was second in the javelin with a throw of 196-10. Stewart was second in the long jump with 23-6 while Allen won the triple jump at 48-4.75.For the womens team Haynes won the shot put with 43-9.75 and Kim Riley won the high jump with 5-6. Dyer was the winner of the 400m hurdles with 1:00.75.The Bearkats will travel to Baylor this Saturday to compete with teams from Baylor, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Stephen F. Austin and UT-San Antonio, Hinze said.
