Sam Houston State University students will be able to fine-tune their writing skills this semester in a series of writing workshops sponsored by the SHSU Writing Center. A total of 11 workshops will be open for students to attend at no charge. Students are simply encouraged to show up at the writing center at the designated workshop time to receive tutoring, said Writing Center Assistant Delma Talley.The workshops are normally small groups that allow students to discuss topics one-on-one with the tutor, said Talley. More than 30 tutors ranging from graduate assistants to undergraduate students will be participating in the workshops. “Workshops address issues that would apply across the curriculum for writing enhanced classes,” said Talley.The workshops will begin on Wednesday at 12 p.m. with a session titled “From Idea to Thesis.” On Sept. 29 at 10 a.m., a workshop will allow ESL students to discuss ESL writing strategies and review the writing center services.On Oct. 2 at 9 a.m., a workshop focusing on plagiarism will be presented followed by a session focusing on APA Internet documentation style on Oct. 6 at 12 p.m.On Oct. 8 at 1 p.m., a workshop titled “Using other People’s Words: How to Quote Effectively” will take a look at conventions for incorporating quotes and paraphrasing. A second workshop will also be held on this day at 5 p.m. with the focus on MLA Internet documentation style.Students will be able to tackle organizational schemes and essay structure on Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. followed by a punctuation workshop on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.Tutors and students will also take a look at essay strategies on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. and discuss proofreading techniques on Oct. 30 at 11 a.m.Finally, graduate students will be able to attend a workshop on Nov. 4 at 4 p.m. to focus on writing application essays and statements of purpose for graduate school.”If there is one person who comes and gets something out of the workshops, then it is considered a success,” said Talley.For more information contact The Writing Center at (936)294-3680.
