Craig Rex named new Bearkat golf coach

Craig Rex, formerly compliance coordinator for the University of Arizona and golf coach at Northwestern State University, has been hired as head coach for men’s and women’s golf at Sam Houston State University, Director of Athletics Bobby Williams announced.As head coach at Northwestern State, Rex directed the Demons to their highest Southland Conference finish ever and produced the team’s first four All-Southland Conference golfers. He served as head golf coach from 1992 to 1995. He has worked as compliance coordinator at the University of Arizona in Tucson since 1998 and was director of compliance and academic services at Northwestern State for three years.”Craig Rex is going to be an outstanding addition to our Sam Houston State athletic staff,” Williams said. “With his background in golf, in coaching, and in compliance plus his knowledge of the Southland Conference, Craig will be able to step right in and do a great job for us. We’re thrilled to welcome him to Huntsville.”During his four seasons at Northwestern State, Rex established a strong national and international recruiting base, signing several top junior players during his tenure. His golf team lowered the team stroke average by 15 shots from 1992 to 1994. He also coached the Demons to their first ever NCAA Division I regular season golf tournament victory.”Sam Houston State has a rich tradition of golf excellence and it’s very exciting to become a part of that tradition,” Rex said. “It’s great to return to the Southland Conference.”Rex received his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. He was a member of the basketball and golf teams at Hamline. He earned his Master of Science Degree in Sports Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Rex worked for Northwest Airlines and was an assistant basketball coach at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., before joining the staff at Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., in 1990. Since joining the staff at the University of Arizona, he also has worked in golf tournament operations for Heritage Highlands Golf Course in Marana, Ariz. and the Sheraton El Conquistador Resort and the Omni Resort in Tucson, Ariz.
