Men’s and Women’s club soccer wins

The Sam Houston State Men’s Soccer Club won its last game 7-0 against the University of San Antonio last Saturday.Luis Gandara, the men’s soccer club coach and vice president, said there is a lot of talent on the team.”The past couple of games have started to give everyone confidence in each other and it is helping us learn how well each one of us moves,” Gandara said. “There are a lot of new guys on the team, so basically there is a lot of talent out there. With our team being new, it took us a while to get to know who we were playing with.” Three goals were scored in the first half by Aaron Pratt. “We have our confidence up with the past game since we kept our scores up high and that was all it took,” said Gandara. “I think we have a lot of potential.” SHSU had to forfeit a game on Sept. 22, which might keep the team from the play offs, Burrows said.”If it had not been for a forfeit, we would definitely be in the running for the play offs,” he said. “Because we had to give that forfeit, we are probably out of play off contention.”The team will travel to the University of Houston this weekend. The soccer team has one more home game on Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. at Pritchett Field located on the corner of 17th Street and Avenue O. The team will take on Texas A&M Kingsville.”All our home games have been really exciting,” Burrow said. “It is a lot of fun to come out and it makes the game fun for us to hear the people cheering.”The women’s soccer team has struggled this season, but got the ball rolling last Saturday with a 4-0 win over Texas-Arlington “We are struggling very much this year. We are in a new division, so we are playing bigger schools like A&M and Texas,” team president Donna Jordan said. “We are playing bigger teams, so we have struggled a lot.”The women will be in action again on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Pritchett Field against the University of Texas. For more information about women’s soccer, Jordan can be reached at 439-0679.
