Tennis blanks Centenary 7-0

The Bearkat tennis team swept through Shreveport, La., to face Centenary and left with a solid 7-0 victory over the Ladies.Each of the Bearkats won their singles matches in two games.Ivette Andrade, SHSU’s No. 1 player, squeeked out her first game 7-6 against Centenary’s Mandy Yearwood. Andrade continured her record setting winning by closing Yearwood down in the second game 6-2.The win raised Andrades career SHSU record to 49 victories.Mounia Hassib followed up in the No. 2 SHSU spot with a 6-1, 6-2 scalding of Sarah Everett.Diala Ammar, Erika Rudich and Jayme Holstrom overtook their competitors seemingly with ease, with only one of the group’s three games reaching a third point.Although Centenary’s Elizabeth Pitts tried to stop the Bearkats from blanking her team, SHSU’s Veronica Castillo fought hard to pull out the win. Castillo barely made it out of the first game with a 7-5 win. The second game was just as close. Castillo grabbed the match from Pitts with a 6-4 decision.The Bearkats were equally successful in doubles play.Centenary’s No. 1 doubles team, Everett-Mandy Yearwood, tried to put up a fight, but succumbed to Bearkat team Ammar-Andrade 8-4.SHSU’s No. 2 and No. 3 teams ran away with their matches.Hassib-Rudich slashed Ladies Lindsay Yearwood-Pitts 8-1. Castillo-Holstrom followed their lead with an 8-1 win over team Saba Khonsari-Brandy Smith.The 7-0 victory over Centenary marks the third time this season the tennis team has swept a dual.The team plays UT-Arlington today in Huntsville at the McAdams Tennis Facility at 2 p.m. The dual is the first of four Southland Conference competitions in the next three weeks, before the conference tournament begins April 26..
