Dear Editor, Recently I had a run in with UPD. I am 18 under the legal drinking age and I understand that when I drink I take a risk of being caught. I am against drinking and driving; I do not let any of my friends drink and drive. Last Tuesday I had been drinking at a friend’s apartment at UPA. I had a couple of beers and decided that I shouldn’t drive so I thought I could just walk back to my dorm. (It was a pretty night) I live in Kirkley hall 127. I had walked all the way back on campus, I was about 100 yards past residence life, I was walking on the sidewalk and I was talking on my cell phone. I wasn’t drunk; I wasn’t walking like I was drunk. And a police officer (UPD) drove up right behind me, it was about 2:00am. He turned his lights on and I turned around and he got out of his car and walked up to me. He asked me if I had been drinking and I said “a couple of beers” He then gave an eye test and asked me again if I had been drinking I told him the same thing. He then told me to put my hands behind my back and I asked him why and he said you’re under arrest for P.I. I asked him why I couldn’t just get a ticket and go straight to my dorm room, which I pointed at. He said no you’re going to jail. I went to jail; they took away my cell phone. They told me I had one call, I didn’t know anyone number by heart except my dorm room which no one answered. I asked for me cell phone to look up a friend’s number but they said no. I called my girlfriend who drove two hours to come bail me out. When she got here to bail me out they told her she had to wait for shift change another hour. We are in college; college kids are going to drink. Please if I drive and drink then arrest me, but who was a hurting walking on the side walk back. Why did I have to go to jail? I don’t have the money for that kind of ticket. The definition of a P.I is a person that is drunk or had been drinking that is in danger to himself or to others. Why is UPD like that?
