The women’s basketball team ended a two-game home stand grabbing only its second win of the season against the Southwest Texas Bobcats 70-65 Monday.With SHSU three points ahead and eight seconds on the clock, Bearkat guard Kelly Brown made two free throws to ice the game.Brown led the Bearkat effort scoring 23 points for the Bearkats. Guard Amy Barker and forward Alice Johnson followed up Brown’s performance with 18 and 10 points respectively.The Bearkats came out strong in the first half with the team shooting 47.6 percent in the paint and 55.6 percent from outside to take the lead from the start of the game. The Bearkats held onto that lead until the last 10 minutes of the game, when Bobcat Kendal Arant hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 50-50.The women complimented their first-half effort by shooting 47.1 percent from the inside and 78.3 percent from the free-throw line.Saturday the Lady Kats dropped a 42-40 nail biter to Texas-San Antonio.After being down by as many as 22 points during the game, SHSU went on a 22 point streak to take the lead over the Roadrunners 39-40.A three-point shot by UTSA clenched the game for the Roadrunners after a Bearkat layup was unsuccessful.A 13-point effort by Brown led the Bearkats. Johnson added another 10 points to the total.Paulette Valentine grabbed 11 rebounds for the Bearkats.The Bearkats are 2-12 in the Southland Conference and 2-19 overall after their win over Southwest Texas.
