McAvoy leads attack on Monroe

A.J. McAvoy went five for eight with two homers this weekend as she and the SHSU softball team took two of three from visiting Louisiana Monroe in conference play.Sam Houston State came out swinging in the 6-3 game against ULM Saturday backing up an impressive outing by pitcher Rachel Atzenhoffer.In seven innings, Atzenhoffer only gave up three runs on five hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. The Kats were dominant at the plate with 11 hits in the game.McAvoy went three for four with two runs scored and two RBI’s with a double and her first homerun of the season.Melissa Cosgrove put her fifth homerun over the fence for two RBI’s.Erin Lindsey added to the hit parade with a double while going two for three with an RBI.The second game of the day did not end as well with the Kats getting beat 4-0. Louisiana Monroe’s Annie Van Oosbree outpitched Melissa Hayslip only giving up four hits to Hayslip’s eight. ULM scored four runs off Hayslip while walking four times and striking out twice.A fresh start Sunday put Atzenhoffer on the mound once more for SHSU and added to the team’s record to put them at 7-8 in conference with a final score of 3-0 for the day. Atzenhoffer shut out ULM in seven innings giving up five hits and putting three strikeouts in the book.McAvoy hit her second homerun of the season going one for two on the day. Lindsey also added a homerun to her stats giving her three on the year.The team will face Texas-Arlington at home this weekend in a three-game SLC series. The first game of the double header will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.
