The SHSU Department of Theatre and Dance will present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music” on the Mainstage Theatre April 10 13 at 8 p.m. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on April 13. “The Sound of Music” is an American classic. Based on Maria von Trapp’s book “The Trapp Family Singers,” the musical was an instant success on Broadway in 1959 starring Mary Martin as Maria. In 1965 the play was made into a movie with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in the roles of Maria and Captain von Trapp.The story chronicles the life of Maria Rainer, played by Haley Dyes, and her journey from postulant to governess to Baroness von Trapp. Along the way she marries Captain von Trapp, played by Daniel Hronek, and acquires seven children. The final moments of the show find the family fleeing from Austria.”The Sound of Music” is directed by Penelope Hasekoester and choreographed by Jonathan Charles. The musical director and conductor is Barbara Corbin. The set was designed by Shawn Fisher, with lighting design by Patrick Pearson and costume design by Kris Hanssen.Other principal characters include musical theatre majors Maggie Wilhite, Stephen Pavalock, Sarah Collins, Brandon Travelstead, Sarah Ripper, Nikki Thomas and Holland Vavra.Tickets are $12 or $10 with a senior citizen or SHSU student ID.
