Women United will host its first semi-social event, “Divas Live” tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the LSC Theater.”Divas Live” is a spin off of the cable VH1 special. Members of the organization, along with recruited talent, will impersonate some of the divas that were featured in the original show.”The audience will see performances by Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, Madonna and others,” said founder of the organization Chestin Auzenne.All profits of the event go towards the holiday fund, said Auzenne. “We adopt a family and donate can goods and toys to SAAFE house.”The cost for admission is $1 for pre-sale tickets and $2 at the door. A $1 fee plus a can good is also permitted for door entry to the event. Pre-sale tickets will be sold from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Mall Area.The organization is non-profit and encourages the sociologic and political exploration of students. It is comprised of four committees that work together for one cause. The Planning committee takes care of the events, Research and Records investigate the facts, and the Public Relations and the Communication committees take care of delivering the information.Women United volunteers to help local organization such as SAAFE House and the Children Defense House. Auzenne said most of the members have been or are presently volunteers for these organizations.”I feel this organization is educational and gears women to what we want to do and accomplish,” said junior Letecia Ellis.Women United became an SHSU recognized organization last year, said Auzenne. She also said that the group was formed after several students that attended an African American history class showed interest in major issues.”We were interested in real issues, outside of those featured in Glamour and Bazaar magazines,” said Auzenne. “It’s a growing organization and we are always looking for members.” She said that Women United does not discriminate on account of race, religion or sexual orientation students “must be involved in some type of community service, this includes off or on campus.”Those interested in joining can deliver a letter to Student Activities including their name, address, telephone number and e-mail.
