Man shot, stabilized

A confrontation occurred between two African-American males at The Vineyards of Sam Houston, formerly known as Logan Place Apartments at 2608 El Toro Drive on Tuesday, Sept. 30, around 12:15 p.m.According to a press release from the Huntsville Police Department, the suspect has been identified as Kevin Girrard Smith, 29. He shot the victim one time in the head at close range with a small caliber handgun. The victim, whose name has not yet been released, was transported to the emergency room at Huntsville Memorial Hospital where he was examined and stabilized for transportation by Life Flight to Houston. Smith fled the scene and was later stopped by Huntsville Police Department School Resources Officer David Warner, who responded to the area based on witness information provided through dispatch.Officer Warner took Smith into custody and the weapon that was believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered.Shelly Adkins, manager of The Vineyards of Sam Houston, said that the two men were not residents of the apartments and that the apartment complex is doing everything it can to secure the area.A resident who lives near where the shooting took place said that the two males were believed to be related.This offense is still under investigation.
