SHSU gets ‘Star Spangled’ for Parents’ Weekend

Sam Houston State University’s Dean of Students’ Office and the Parents’ Association invites the SHSU student body to participate in this year’s “Star Spangled” Parents’ Weekend Oct. 3-5.According to Mary Ellen Sims, assistant dean of students, the goal of Parents’ Weekend is to get parents to spend time with their bearkat in a structured environment with fun activities. This year’s Parents’ Weekend will be a showcase of fine arts by the drama department and a musical by the choir and orchestra. There were many volunteers that helped mail out 7,600 information packets to SHSU parents. According to Dean Sims, the Generation Gap Game is a lot of fun and is a great way to see how well parents and their children know each other. There will be a buffet dinner called ” Bearkats on Broadway” in the LSC Ballroom called on Saturday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance for $10 and on site for $12 if seating is available. The first 200 students on a meal plan will be able to eat for free, but they must get a ticket from the Dean of Students Office in advance. Senior Latasia Turner said, “Parents’ Weekend is a great way for parents to come out and get involved with their children in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.” Sims is really excited about Sunday’s Worship service because Soul Lifters’ will be participating, and John Yarabeck, associate dean of students, will be delivering the message.Organizations are also encouraged to participate in Parents’ Weekend by showing their parents what it is they do in their organization. Last year, SGA held an open house so that parents and students could see and learn exactly what the organization does. The ROTC department invites parents to watch field training exercises Saturday at Gibb’s Ranch. Parents will be able to observe the type of training ROTC students get while in the program. Helicopter exercises will be conducted Friday on the Texas A&M campus. Parents interested in joining the Parents’ Association of SHSU can sign up all weekend for $25 per year, per family.Another activity that will be taking place during the weekend is the 29th Annual Huntsville Fair on the Square on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., sponsored by the Huntsville Walker County Chamber of Commerce.
