Innovative and colorful are just a few words that describe the paintings hanging in the Gaddis Geeslin Gallery in Art building F.The paintings by Leslie Bell were done using oil paint on canvas and depict female figures with landscape in a variety of situations. “Leslie Bell was chosen because of his painting style,” said SHSU Art Audio/Visual Librarian, Debbie Davenport.Bell is a professor at St. Ambrose University and received his maters of fine arts at Northern Illinois University. He has shown solo and group shows throughout the United States. He has received grants from Iowa and Illinois Arts Councils and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.”All artists have some kind of message they want to send. It is nice to have it received by interested people”, said artist, Leslie Bell. The sixteen paintings by Bell are currently on display and can be viewed by anyone until September18, and on Thursday, September 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. there will be a reception.Some of the paintings were delivered by Bell himself and range from $500 to $1200. “It’s nice to have somebody like it enough to buy it,” said Bell. A few of the displayed paintings are titled “Girl with Hooded Falcon”, “Eve’s Apple Green Dress”, “La Strada”, “Mothers and Daughter”, “Genre Chaos” and “Aqua Opera”. The gallery displays a variety of art throughout the year and hundreds of artists apply to have their art work displayed in the gallery. A team of professors from the art department choose which artist’s work will be displayed in the gallery, and, so far this year, the number has been cut down to nine. Davenport said the professors choose the work of the artist based on the learning experience for students, brush strokes, colors and composition.Any one interested in seeing a few of Bell’s paintings online or interested in future shows can visit the SHSU website under the art department link for more information.
