Volleyball to travel to Wyoming for tournament

The Sam Houston State volleyball team will travel to Laramie, Wyo. to participate in the Wyoming Invitational this weekend. The Bearkats are coming off a 2-2 finish in Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Sea Island Shrimp House Classic last weekend.”We had a good weekend, but we just couldn’t beat a couple of teams,” head coach Brenda Gray said. “We came home at 2-2 and we are right at the top of the conference , and that is were we need to be.”The Kats will play host Wyoming on Friday in the first game and coach Gray thinks that the competition should be tough.”You want good competition in these tournaments and you also want your players to play well. It’s hard to beat the host school since they are getting to play at home, but there should be plenty of tough schools there.”Sam Houston finished third at the TAMU-CC tournament and senior outside hitter Carrie Sartain was named to the All-Tournament team. The Bearkats split matches on both days of the tournament. SHSU lost in four to Texas Tech, but then rebounded with a four-game victory over host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. On Saturday, the Kats fell to Southern Mississippi in the first game and defeated North Carolina A&T to finish the tournament. “”We had two key players that didn’t play this weekend,” Gray said. “If we would have had them it may have been different, but I was pleased with what I saw.”Texas Tech won all four of its matches to take first place in the event and Southern Mississippi finished second with a 3-1 record. The Kats first home match will be Sept. 22 against Baylor at Johnson Coliseum. The game is scheduled to start at 7p.m.
