I just wanted to tip my hat to the various spring athletic programs for a fantastic semester. From basketball to track, the Bearkats have done the university proud and giving the students of SHSU a reason to be glad to be a part of this university.
First of all, I would like to congratulate head coach Bob Marlin and the rest of the staff and players from the 2003 Southland Conference champion men’s basketball team for a memorable season. For the first time in school history, the Kats represented our school on the national stage in the NCCA Tournament, thanks to hard work and a relentless effort. Even though things didn’t turn out for the best, the team gave us a reason to hold our heads high and get excited about the future of our program. Good luck in the future seniors, in what ever you do. Thank you all and thank you Donald Cole for hitting that shot.
I also want to give props to the softball team and head coach Bob Brock for an incredible run into the semi-finals of the SLC Tournament. Not only did the Bearkats fight their way in, but also they turned some heads and made a statement. Brock has done a great job in getting the program headed in the right direction. Thank you ladies for rising above the call of duty.
What can I say about the track and field team? They continue to break record after record, as they prepare for the SLC Championships. Coach Greg Hinze is determined to bring home a championship and he has his team believing. He also has the students believing as well. Good luck next week.
I know that the status of the women’s basketball program is up in the air right know as the search continues for a new head coach, but if this season taught us anything, it is the fact there is an upside. Injuries forced some younger players into the fire, but they responded well and they have a bright future in store for them. Losing SLC scoring champ Alice Johnson will be tough, but they have a strong nucleus returning. Thank you, Alice, for a stellar career.
I’m sure the tennis team didn’t have the type of year they were expecting, but how clutch is it that they ended the season on a high note by beating SFA? Way to go, team. There is a lot of promise there, and I’m sure that next season will be better.
The baseball team is right in the thick of the SLC Tournament hunt. Coming into this week, the team is currently one game behind a tie for sixth place. Just when you think the Kats are out of it, they step up their game and get back in the race. Head coach Chris Rupp will not let them surrender, and things should get interesting down the stretch. Good luck during the playoff push.
The men and women’s golf teams turned in a solid season this spring. The men’s team finished in a tie for eighth and had some strong outings. The women’s team shot their way into a fourth-way finish at the SLC Championship. Here’s to a good season.
I just wanted to once again thank our student athletes for an outstanding spring sports season. Good luck to all the departing seniors and, to everyone who will be back, keep up the class acts. I will leave you with a quote from Houston Rockets head coach Rudy Tomjanovich that I feel sums up this semester: “Never underestimate the heart of a champion.”
