Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival

It is that time of year again for the Annual Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival. The festival, which is in it’s 14th year, draws over 30,000 people to hear music, browse craft booths and exhibits and eat Cajun food.The festival was started in 1990 by the Friends of Conroe and has been held annually ever since on the downtown Conroe Square. The square is closed off, and the streets are shut down so the festival takes place in the streets. The city offers a small town atmosphere in a very historic downtown area. The Friends of Conroe are a non-profit organization. The proceeds of the festival will benefit the greater Conroe area.The Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival features fun events for everybody, including continuous live music on multiple stages, a carnival, numerous food and craft booths, and a golf tournament. They also have catfish races, a children’s area, mechanical bull riding and dancing.Richard Willis, Chairman of Logistics for the Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival, said, “It is one of the neatest well run events, very colorful, great food and the best entertainment you can find for the dollar in the state of Texas. There is something for every member of the family young and old, and the weather’s gonna be great.”A couple of new things will be added to the festival this year, “For the first time this year, we have Kachunga, an alligator wrestler. He will be wrestling a live alligator,” said Willis. In addition, Conroe will be using it’s new park and amphitheatre for the first time in the Texas area.This year’s performers will include Elvis impersonators, the Zydeco Dots, Soul 2 Soul, Shadowcasters, Bayou Roux and The Fabulous Thunderbirds, to name a few.The festival is this weekend in Conroe. The hours of operation this Friday are 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday from 11 a.m. until midnight and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, children under 12 and seniors over 65 are free.
