Theatre Department is not worth your time.

Is this where I send in letters for page 2 if so my letter begins on the next line

I have a beef with the theatre department. I have taken classes for my minor in technical theatre. And I would like this letter to serve as resignation from my theatre minor.I am thoroughly unimpressed with the department here at Sam. One of the classes I took was awesome I learned a lot. I would like to congratulate Kris Hanssen on teaching a really good stage makeup class. There has not been a single other positive experience. The fact that I am a minor makes me feel as though I have been preemptively eliminated from ever beating a major out for a position. And it is not just me.A friend of mine will graduate either in spring or next fall with a major in theatre. She has never had a part, and all theatre majors have to audition for every play, every semester. I am not discounting her acting abilities, she has been through the same classes that everyone else has had. I think though that if I were a senior with no experience it would be time to change majors. I am sure she is not alone. The class I am in now was my favorite part of theatre in high school. I was excited to be finally getting back into it after a couple year break. It is the worst class I have ever had, in any subject. I have no doubt that my teacher is qualified, from all the “good ol'” stories he tells us in class his resum must be a near mile long. But I still abhor his class. It has sealed the deal in my changing minors. I do not think that I have learned anything past what I already knew from high school. One would think that a college course would take you above and beyond your quick brush over of the curriculum that we receive in high school. After all, every other class I have ever taken at Sam in the last two years has done just that.Something has to change in the theatre department. I feel as though there is a club there and I’m not in it and never will be. I could go through achieve my minor and still be out of the loop. Whenever “official club business” is discussed in class it is said in a tone that everyone there should already be familiar with the topic yet not descriptively enough to let those who have no idea what is being said in on the discussion. It is not an open department, if you don’t come in as a freshman knowing everything you will never know anything. I am a photography major, and I love it. Anytime I need a question answered I can have it so, and I would hope to think the minors feel the same way. But I don’t feel as though I have been given that chance in the theatre department. All across the campus I see teachers dedicated to all of their students no matter if that is the only class they will ever teach that person or they will teach 100 more. I don’t see that dedication in the Sam Houston Department of Theatre and Dance. Something has to change.-Tice Bain
