Kats will try to tame Demons and Indians

The Sam Houston State volleyball team hosts a pair of must-win matches this weekend as the Bearkats fight to keep alive their chance for a 2003 Southland Conference tournament berth.

“Last week’s Hawaiian theme was great. Over 400 people where in the coliseum,” said Head Coach Brenda Gray.

Friday, the Bearkats play host to the Northwestern State Demons (10-14, SLC5-7) at 7 p.m. Friday’s match with Northwestern State is “70s Night” with prizes for the best 70s outfit worn by a Bearkat fan.

Saturday, the Bearkats host the Louisiana-Monroe Indians (4-18, SLC 0-11) at 4 p.m. Saturday’s match will “Kid’s Night” every kid wearing orange who comes into the Johnson Coliseum will receive a free orange sucker form the “Orange Crush Crew.” The kids will also be able to meet “Sammy the Bearkat” at 3:45 p.m.

“We need to make sure we finish matches,” said Coach Gray. This weekend’s matches begin the second half of the 2003 Southland schedule for the Bearkats. In their first meeting this year, SHSU lost to Northwestern State at Natchitoches in three games on Sept. 19. The Bearkats defeated Louisiana-Monroe in three games on Sept. 20. “Our goal is to finish the second half with conference with a 7-3 record,” said Coach Gray.

Northwestern State is lead by Priscila Augusta with 314 kills, 278 digs and 64 blocks while Becky Davis has 273 kills and 170 digs. Northwestern State has lost their last three games in SLC action.

The Bearkats are lead by senior Carrie Sartain with 199 kills and 200 digs while sophomore Alisha Fowler has added 194 kills and leads the team with 45 blocks. Sophomore Chrissy Engle has 172 kills and 26 blocks. Junior Karlee Butler has 740 assists on the season and has added 128 digs while freshman Rhae Walderman has 133 kills and 175 digs. “Everybody has to do there part, and everybody needs to step it up,” said Coach Gray.

The top six finishers in the SCL regular season standing will qualify for the SLC tournament to be hosted by the University of Texas-San Antonio Friday through Sunday, Nov. 21-23. The winner of the tournament receives the Southland Conference NCAA Division I tournament berth.

Sam Houston State stands ninth place in the 11-team SLC race with a 3-7 conference mark. The Bearkats are 6-12 overall. “Anyone can win on any given night since no one is really outstanding in the SLC,” said Coach Gray.
