Kats tally two conference wins over weekend

The Sam Houston State volleyball team defeated Northwestern State and Louisiana-Monroe in two important wins this weekend at Johnson Coliseum.

“These two wins really made us feel better about going to the conference tournament,” said head coach Brenda Gray.

On Friday, sophomore Alisha Fowler had a career high 23 kills and added five blocks. Senior Carrie Sartain added 20 kills and 29 digs.

“Carrie Sartain was the difference this weekend, and Alisha Fowler also stepped it up,” said Coach Gray.

Sophomore Chrissy Engle had 14 kills, three blocks and 13 digs. The Bearkats won in five games 30-25, 26-30, 30-25, 24-30 and 15-9.

In Saturday’s game, Sartain had 18 kills, and Engle added 11. Junior Karlee Butler totaled 120 assists in the two matches. The Bearkats extended Louisiana-Monroe’s conference losing streak to 13 games with a 30-27, 30-28, and 30-17 victory.

“We are keep getting better after ever game we play,” said Coach Gray.

The Bearkats will be on the road for their next three conference games. Their first action will be tonight in San Antonio against UTSA and this weekend against McNeese State and Lamar.

“We need to take care of business because any team can win the conference,” said Coach Gray.
