Tennis ready to get conference play underway after loses

The LadyKat tennis team dropped two matches this weekend to some tough competition.

Friday morning, the squad faced off with Abilene Christian University, a team that blanked the LadyKats last year.

While none of the three doubles teams were able to post a win, Tara Shelander was able to pull out a win at the number one singles spot in a super tie-breaker after splitting sets with Lacy Johnson (6-1, 3-6, 10-8), and Fati Benboubker did the same against Colleen Reynolds (3-6, 6-1, 10-4).

Number two singles player Mounia Hassib also split sets, but was topped in the super tie-breaker by Sarah Taweel (7-5, 1-6, 10-7). ACU finished the match on top 5-2.

The LadyKats had Saturday off to rest, but they would be back at work Sunday afternoon, taking on the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The team had never competed with UNC-Charlotte before Sunday, so the competition was fresh.

Although the squad lost the match 5-2, several of the girls played extremely well. Shelander and Benboubker both came out of the match with singles wins.

However, the Kats couldn’t manage to find a break in the doubles.

Despite putting up a tough fight, the team dropped all three doubles matches.

The girls will begin conference play today with a home match against the University of Texas-Arlington at 2:30 p.m. The match promises a lot of good tennis and some fierce competition.

UTA was the SLC Women’s Tennis Champion team last spring, and will be strong again this season.

The girls are looking forward to the challenge and getting conference play underway.
