Dan Richard Beto, executive director of the SHSU Correctional Management Institute of Texas, received the George M. Keiser Award for Exceptional Leadership during the National Association of Probation Executives’ Annual Awards Breakfast on August 24.George M. Keiser, the man whom the award is named after, was chief of the community corrections division of the National Institute of Corrections. Also, prior to joining the Justice Department, he had a well known corrections career in Iowa and was one of the authors of the Iowa Community Corrections Act. Beto feels that, “it is an honor to receive an award named after George Keiser, who is a true servant leader.” Keiser was present at the awards ceremony and shared that he felt Beto as a recipient was “well deserved.” Beto served as president of the National Association of Probation Executives from 2000 – 2002. He was honored for his “untiring work on behalf of the profession,” said Gerald R. Hinzman, a member of the association’s board of directors. Hinzman also said that, “Dan is known as a practitioner, teacher, writer, mentor, researcher and leader, and he is respected for his intellect, experience, high standards and work ethic.”Founded in 1981, the National Association of Probation Executives (NAPE) is a professional organization representing the chief executive officers of local, county and state probation agencies.Before Beto took his position at SHSU, he worked as the Director for the Judicial District Community Supervision and Corrections Department for Walker, Grimes and Madison Counties. He also served as a federal and juvenile probation officer, as well as a chief probation officer in two Texas jurisdictions.
