Bearkat tennis team splits weekend roadtrip: Defeats Louisiana Monroe

The Sam Houston State tennis team is preparing to wrap up the season with three home conference games after a split on the road last weekend.

The Bearkats traveled to Natchitoches, La., to face the Demons of Northwestern on Saturday.

Junior Mounia Hassib took the only victory of the day when she defeated Northwestern’s Eliza Young 6-0 and 6-1 in a singles match-up. SHSU took an overall loss of 6-1.

Sunday brought a new light to the team when they traveled on to battle the University of Louisiana-Monroe Indians.

The Bearkat victories were plentiful. In a doubles match, Sophomore Cristina Flores and Hassib finished off the Indian’s Diana Espinal and Nataly Ostrovska 8-4.

In singles, SHSU’s Freshmen Emma McDougal, Amanda Jung and Samantha Edelman all took wins over ULM.

Also marking victories in singles were Junior Erika Rudich, Hassib and Flores.

SHSU finished the weekend with a dominating win of 6-1 over ULM.

Sitting at 2-5 and eighth in conference standings, the Bearkats will compete in their last three conference match-ups at home.

This weekend, SHSU will begin with the McNeese State Cowgirls at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Sitting in third place and 7-2 in conference standings, the Cowgirls are coming off a hard loss against the 7-0 conference rivals Mavericks of UT-Arlington.

On Sunday, Lamar University will be visiting SHSU for a 10 a.m. match-up.

The Cardinals are sitting just below the Bearkats in ninth place and 1-7 in conference standings. They are also on a two-match losing streak.

In their final conference home match-up, SHSU will host the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Thursday, April 8.

SFA is ranked one seed above the Bearkats in seventh in conference with a 2-4 SLC record.

With their dominating win over ULM, the Bearkats head into their final home games of the season with a positive boost.
