The Student Government Association held their weekly meeting on Tuesday in the LSC and discussed the “Beefs for Grieves” program and the intern program before entering into executive session.
SGA, in part with the Grievances Committee which is responsible for “receiving and investigating any student grievances,” will sponsor the “Beefs for Grieves” program Oct. 18 from 11:00 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m. in the mall area. SGA found success last year with the “Beef for Grieves” program, where students got an opportunity to express their concerns with the university, in exchange for coupons for free hamburgers.
SGA also passed bill number F05-06, a bill from the Rules and Regulations Committee discussing “computer use policy.” The bill states that computers in the SGA office “shall only be used by SGA senators, officers and receptionists.” Interns are allowed to use the computers as well, but must “relinquish” control of the computer after SGA business is completed.
“We had a report from Dan McDaniel that someone was in the office real late at night and wouldn’t get out when they were supposed to,” said Chair of the Rules and Regulations Committee, Chris Whitaker, during the meeting. “We are stepping up a little bit,” he added.
Whitaker also made a motion to suspend the intern program.
“We are only doing this because there is no flat out rules on the intern program,” said Whitaker. SGA plans on writing actual guidelines on the intern program to settle areas of uncertainty with the SGA intern program.
SGA then went into an Executive Session, where discussion is closed off from observers and media in the room. A motion to discuss applicants for SGA positions was made before entering into the Executive Session. Under Article III, section 11, SGA has a right to enter into Executive Session and clear the galleries, therefore shutting the door on what would be an open meeting to the public.
“It gave us an opportunity to clear the air on a few things, without having the public involved,” said Vice President Cory Garcia.
The next SGA meeting will take place on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center, room 304.
