Bearkats sweep SLC foes

The Sam Houston State Bearkats erased the ugly memory of a tough loss to Stephen F. Austin last week with a weekend sweep of Lamar and McNeese State.

Both wins kept SHSU in second place in the Southland Conference with a 6-1 record. All six wins have now been at home.

On Saturday night, the Kats went on the offensive attack against Lamar and swept the three-game match 30-7, 30-20 and 30-26. Lindsey Roebken had 11 kills and Alisha Fowler and Cynthia Yarotsky each had 10. In all the Kats notched 48 kills in 87 attempts.

SHSU marched off 19 consecutive points in game en route to their 30-7 win. Megan McNamara had five service aces during that tenure. The Kats breezed through Lamar in game two as well but saw a desperate Cardinals team in the final game. The Cardinals stayed close throughout and even came within three points at 27-24, but SHSU put any hopes of a comeback away with two kills from Roebken and one from Rhae Walderman.

On the defensive side, Jennifer Henrichsen led the team with 13 digs, and McNamara had 39 assists to help maintain the Kats attack on offense.

Sam Houston also swept away McNeese State Friday night with wins of 30-27, 30-24 and 30-25 at Johnson Coliseum. The win moved the Kats past the Cowgirls into second place. Yarotsky had another great game with 15 kills, three aces and three blocks. McNeese held leads in all three games yet the Kats managed to find their rhythm late.

Next up on the schedule for the Kats is their game tonight in Houston against Rice University. Game-time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
