The Sam Houston women’s volleyball team hit a road block on Tuesday night as they lost to the Rice Owls in Houston in four games.
The Owls record is now 14-4 overall, while the Bearkats drop to 8-8.The Kats had won their last six out of seven. The match will not affect Sam Houston’s Southland Conference standings.
The Bearkats played the Owls close throughout most of the match, but behind the hot play of Olayo Pazo, who totaled 21 kills, Rice left the night with another win in the column.The Rice Owls won with scores of 30-26, 30-20, 20-30, and 30-15.
In the third game, the Bearkats were tied with the Rice Owls 15 different times before Sam Houston finally prevailed. But, the ladies could not continue the hot streak into the fourth game, as the Rice Owls defense stood strong.
The Owls had four different players score double digits in digs over the course of the night.
Leading the Bearkats was senior Alisha Fowler who totaled 10 kills and five blocks throughout the night.Sophomore sensation Cynthia Yarhotsky chipped in with nine kills, and senior Chrissy Engle had eight.
Despite the loss, Sam Houston is still tied with Texas State-San Marcos for second place in the Southland Conference.Both teams stand at 6-1 in conference play.
The ladies return to Johnson Coliseum on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. where they will take on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks are responsible for the only blemish on the conference record of Sam Houston.
