The School of Music at Sam Houston State University presented the first annual John Paul Piano Scholarship concert at the Recital Hall Tuesday night.
About 100 people gathered in the recital hall to listen to the Director of keyboard studies, Dr. Sergio Ruiz, perform the works of Mozart, Liszt, Granados and Prokofiev.
John Paul was a former faculty member and performer at SHSU for 36 years. The concert was performed to honor his accomplishments to SHSU and collect the funds for the scholarship.
Many music major students came to enjoy Ruiz’s piano performance. Joshua Chisun, a piano performance major, enjoyed the concert and was amazed by the performance.
“He was so passionate and animated. I was enthralled by his performance,” said Chisun.
Dr. Ruiz has performed in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City and Houston.
He has also performed in Barcelona, Quito and Ecuador.
He came to SHSU as a faculty member in 2004.
