Bearkats’ rally falls short in 68-63 loss against Centenary

The Bearkat women’s basketball team lost a hard fought game against Centenary, 68-63, Saturday afternoon at the Golden Dome in Shreveport, LA.

Sam Houston got off to a fast start, going up nine points early in the game. The Kats held the lead all of the first half, yet watched it dwindle as halftime approached. As the last seconds ticked, Centenary’s Lindsey Way came up with two easy lay ups off of SHSU turnovers.After chopping the lead down to one point, Centenary appeared to have momentum going into the locker room.

Centenary went on a 12-4 run to start the second half taking the lead, which they would hold the rest of the game.In the final five minutes, the Bearkats would claw back into position to win. Down 10 with only three minutes remaining, the Kats rallied.

In less than one minute, Jamie Barr would sink two free throws, Miriam Garraway put in a layup off of a turnover and Jamie Davison would make two more from the stripe. With 1:58 left, the Kats had brought the score back to a 60-57.

Down 62-64, Barr stole the Centenary inbound pass where Garraway was fouled and given two shots with 13 seconds left and a chance to tie the game. She would only make one, and Centenary would add two more free throws and a last second basket for the 68-63 victory.

Davison, a senior guard/forward, put up a game high 15 points and eight rebounds.Barr and Adah Wells also put in 10 for the Kats. Centenary shot an eye-popping 53 percent from the field. SHSU shot a low 34 percent, yet took more shots.The main plague for the Kats were turnovers, as Centenary scored 20 points off of SHSU’s 24 turnovers.

The next Bearkat women’s basketball game is tonight at 5:15 at Johnson Coliseum against Jarvis Christian.
