Back on Track

The Bearkats needed a big week, and they got it. First, they traveled to San Antonio where they defeated the University of Texas-San Antonio for Coach Bob Marlin’s 250th career win. Then, on Saturday, Sam Houston handled the Bobcats of San Marcos where they won for the first time since 2000, snapping a four game losing streak.

On Saturday, the Bearkats were in San Marcos where they fought off a tough Bobcat squad from Texas State-San Marcos. Chris Jordan led the Bearkats with 20 points. Once again, Ryan Griffin had a superb night coming off the bench, putting in 12 points and blocking three shots.

That win put the Bearkats at 3-2 in conference and 12-5 overall.

Towards the end of the game, with the Bobcats clawing their way back in, the Bearkats had to rely on free throws to ice the game. The team shot a much improved 73 percent from the charity stripe, including a 15-16 combined effort from Jordan, Shamir McDaniel, and Jejuan Plair.

On Thursday night, the Bearkats won their second conference game after trailing through most of the stanza. Jejuan Plair led the Bearkats in scoring with 23 points.

Defense would be the name of the game for the Bearkats in the second half, as they held the Roadrunners to 23 percent shooting from the field. The Bearkats had to step up on the defensive end because their shooting was not too much better. (38 percent)

John Gardiner came through for the Bearkats, giving them 11 points and eight rebounds. Once again, bench hero Ryan Griffin came through when the Bearkats needed him by putting in seven points and grabbing nine boards.

On Wednesday, the Kats will travel to take on the Lions from Southeastern Louisiana. Then, the Kats come back home on Saturday for a showdown with the Mavericks from the University of Texas-Arlington.
