Needing wins to stay in the conference hunt, the SHSU women’s basketball team suffered two heart-wrenching losses this past weekend, losing to both UT-SA and Texas State respectively in overtime.
On Saturday the Bearkats rallied to tie the game in San Marcos, capped off by an Erica Parker jumper that sent the contest into an extra session. However, a quick 6-0 run by the Bobcats proved to be too much to come back from and thus the Bobcats won 73-63, giving SHSU a 6-11 record and 1-5 in Southland Conference play.
The Bearkats had a tough time from the field shooting only 32.8 percent and made only 1-of-9 shots in OT. Britney Harris led the Bearkats with 15 points while Parker chipped in 12. Tamara Thompson scored a game-high 24 points for the Bobcats.
Last Thursday, the Bearkats saw an early lead evaporate late when UT-SA forced the game into overtime with four seconds to play and eventually pulled away 75-71. Katie Sandefur scored 21 points and was 11 of 11 at the charity stripe to lead the Roadrunners. In all, UT-SA shot an amazing 83.9 percent clip from the free throw line, converting 26 of 31.
Angel Brown led the way with 17 points for Sam Houston and Sarah Hilton had 15.
Sam Houston will try to break their losing streak this Thursday when they host Southeastern Louisiana (5-11, 2-4).
