Women’s basketball squeaks out win, 75-69

HUNTSVILLE — Jamie Davison scored 16 points and three other Bearkats scored in double figures as Sam Houston State defeated Northwestern State 75-69 in a Southland Conference women’s basketball game at Johnson Coliseum Thursday night.

Adah Wells socred 11 points and Britney Harris and Jamie Barr each had 10 for Sam Houston (8-12, SLC 3-6) to give the Bearkats their second consecutive home victory.

Sheronda Bell led Northwestern State (10-8, SLC 3-4) with 20 points. Shenise Milliner scored 15 points and Tena Matthews added 14 for the Demons.

Northwestern State, who came into the game in sixth place in the SLC, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first minute. Sam Houston went on a 21-10 run in the next seven minutes to build a 15-point lead, 25-10, after a three point basket by Barr with 12:28 to play.

The Bearkats never trailed again, leading 45-36 at halftime.

The Demons cut the margin to four points, 73-69 with 24 seconds to play, but freshman point guard Ratysha Alexander hit two free throws with 16 seconds left to ice the victory.

The two teams combined for 56 fouls and 78 free throws in a rough contest. Sam Houston State hit 34 of 44 free throws for 77.3 per cent from the line while the Demons were 26 of 34 for 76.5 per cent.

Sam Houston’s next game will be Saturday in Hammond, Louisiana when they play Southeastern La. at 7 p.m.
