Bearkats trying to hold off competition

This Saturday, the Sam Houston State women’s basketball team (8-13) will travel to Hammond, Louisiana to face off against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions.

Sophomore Brooke Necaise of the Lions (8-12) earned last week’s Aeropostale Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week award for her performances versus Texas State and UT-SA.

The 5’8″ guard averaged 14 points, three assists and three rebounds last week.

Necaise did not miss a shot against UT-SA, going 5-5 with 18 points and also clinched the victory with two clutch free throws in the final seconds.

Necaise’s strong play helped Southeastern Louisiana put an end to UT-SA’s five-game SLC winning streak. Consequently, the win extended the Lions’ SLC streak to three straight wins, a first in three years for the program.

With six games left in the season and a tenuous hold on the eighth SLC tournament playoff spot, the Kats will need a victory to fend off Lamar, McNeese and Nicholls, who are all one game back of SHSU.

At the team’s last meeting with the Lions, the Kats won in Huntsville 55-39.

Adah Wells played especially well in that January meeting, accruing a game-high 18 points and team-high six rebounds while shooting 67 percent from the field. The Kats’ 16-point victory halted a four-game losing streak.

The Bearkats will be looking to rebound back from last Saturday’s 74-55 defeat at Louisiana-Monroe and stay alive in the playoff hunt.

In that contest, the Bearkats shot only 36 percent from the field and were out-rebounded 48-32.

The Indians shot 42 percent from the floor and were led by LaJeanna Howard’s 16 points.

The game will tip off at 3 p.m. and will broadcast live on KSAM 1490 AM.

Sam Houston’s next home game will be Feb. 16 against Lamar.
