The College of Business Administration at Sam Houston State University has scheduled its Spring 2006 Business Career Fair for Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 1 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom. “All SHSU students and alumni are invited,” said Dr. R. Dean Lewis, dean of the College of Business Administration and host of the event. “The College sponsors this event for the benefit of all students of all disciplines and everyone is welcome. You do not have to be a business major to attend,” he said.
Fifty organizations have registered, offering a mix of employers from both the public and the private sectors. First-time registrants include ExxonMobil, Ineos, the Houston Chronicle, Parker Drilling Management Resources, Edward Jones, AIG, Houston Wire and Cable, and Worldwide Express. Several organizations are returning, too, including Anadarko Petroleum, CenterPoint Energy, Temple-Inland, Target Stores, the Federal Reserve Bank, the Internal Revenue Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Customs.
“All students can benefit from going to the career fair,” said Margaret Quarles, senior assistant to the dean and coordinator of the event, “whether they are currently in the job market or not.” She suggests that freshmen attend in order to build their confidence when speaking with recruiters and to start making some business contacts. Sophomores should ask about internships, practice their interviewing skills and make more contacts. Juniors should network in earnest to put future job offers in the pipeline, and seniors should focus on jobs currently available with specific organizations.
“Many recruiters keep students’ resumes on file for a long time,” said Quarles, “We know of several graduating seniors who received job offers from recruiters they met back when they were sophomores or juniors.”
Professional dress is not required to attend the career fair,
