Bearkats keep eye on the ball

This weekend the Bearkat softball team will compete in a three-day tournament in Tucson, Ariz. The games will start on Friday, March 3 and run through Sunday.

The Kats were 5-6 heading into Wednesday night’s game against Texas A&M.

However, several of their losses have come from top ranked teams such as No. 5 Texas and No. 15 Baylor.

The team has been hurting lately due to the loss of their top two pitchers Shalayne Blythe and freshman standout Brandi Crnkovic. Blythe has been suffering from arm problems but was expected to be back to full strength for Wednesday’s game. Crnkovic, however, suffered a broken finger on her pitching hand and is expected to be out for at least six weeks.

Coach Brock is expecting freshman Krystal Gay and infielder Mandy Collier to help pick up the slack at pitcher.

The pitching woes have been eased somewhat because the hitting has been solid.

Lauren Boone leads all batters with a .414 average. She is joined by five other Kats who are hitting over .300. With the return of number one pitcher Blythe and a continued strong effort at the plate, the Kats hope to overpower the competition in Arizona and return home in style.
