Three Bearkats earn awards

Sam Houston State’s Chris Jordan, Jejuan Plair and Ryan Bright have earned Southland Conference post-season honors as the 2006 All-Southland Conference honors have been announced.

Jordan, a senior from Hitchcock, is one of five first team All-Southland selections. Plair, a junior from Killeen, is a third team selection and was voted by the league’s head coaches, media and sports information directors as SLC “Newcomer of the Year.” Bright, a sophomore from Deer Park, is a honorable mention selection on the All-SLC team.

Jordan is the leading scorer for the 2006 Bearkats that rolled up a 20-8 season record (Sam Houston State’s third highest NCAA Division I single season victory total) and a runner-up finish in the league race. The only senior on the 2006 squad, Jordan averaged 14.3 points per game.

Plair, a transfer from McLennan Community College, is the leader in assists (5.8) in the Southland Conference and ranks among the league’s top 20 scorers with an 11.7 average.

Bright, who earned SLC “Freshman of the Year” honors in 2005, ranked fourth in the Southland in rebounds this year with 7.7 per game and is averaging 11.1 points per contest.

Ricky Woods of Southeastern Louisiana was named Southland Conference “Player of the Year” after ranking third in scoring at 17.9 points per game and leads the league in rebounding with 11.0 a contest.

The 2006 All-Southland first team is made up of players from five different universities while the honorees occupying the 10 spots of the first and second teams are all seniors. Two seniors and three juniors make up the third team.
